Women's Soccer ties John Carroll 2-2 in double overtime

MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College and John Carroll University battled to a 2-2 double overtime draw Friday (Oct. 7) afternoon in Ohio Athletic Conference women's soccer action. The Pioneers are now 7-4-2 overall and 1-1-1 in the OAC. John Carroll moves to 4-3-6 on the season and 1-0-2 in the conference.

Sophia Moise (Naples, Fla./Naples) put Marietta in front when she headed in a follow-up shot in the 25th minute. McKenzie Dorr (Nashport, Ohio/Tri-Valley) had her shot blocked by JCU keeper Rhianna Guarnera. But Moise was on the right post to put the ball in the back of the net.

John Carroll leveled the match five minutes later. Andrea Regrut threaded a perfect thru ball to Bailey Fischer in the 18-yard box. Fischer found herself one-on-one with Marietta keeper Rebecca Tenney (Pepper Pike, Ohio/Orange) and slipped the ball into the lower right corner of the net to knot the game, 1-1.

Bailey tallied her second goal of the afternoon in the 36th minute. Fischer dribbled through the Pioneer defense creating her second one-on-one with Tenney. Once again Bailey was able to get the ball into the net giving the Blue Streaks a 2-1 lead.

With the public address announcer counting down the final 10 seconds of the first half, Elle Sage (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Falls) dropped a beautiful cross at the top left corner of the 6-yard box where freshman Kelsey Carver (Bellville, Ohio/Clear Fork) was waiting. With two seconds left on the clock, Carver placed the ball inside the far post drawing the Pioneers level at 2-2.

After having four goals scored in the first 45 minutes, both defenses tightened after the intermission. John Carroll's bests coring opportunity came in the 81st minute when Regrut sent a corner kick into the box where Justina Fortson got her head on the ball. Tenney made the save to keep the match tied.

Raeli Barnes (Vincent, Ohio/Warren) had a pair of shots in overtime getting one blocked by a JCU defender and knocking the other high. Cassie Wint (Wooster, Ohio/Wooster) fired off the final shot of the match but Guarnera was there for the save.

Tenney played all 110 minutes and finished with seven saves. Guarnera also played the entire match in goal and recorded seven saves as well.

Each team had nine shots on goal, while John Carroll took a total of 16 shots in the match to Marietta's 13. The Blue Streaks had a 9-3 edge in corner kicks.
