MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College and the University of Mount Union finished in a 2-2 double overtime draw Wednesday (Oct. 12) afternoon in women's soccer action. It was the second straight tie for the Pioneers as the move to 7-4-3 overall and 1-1-2 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. The Purple Raiders are 6-6-1 overall and 2-1-1 in league play.
Marietta struck quickly scoring 2:18 into the match.
Raeli Barnes (Vincent, Ohio/Warren) sent a cross into the 6-yard from near the right corner flag.
McKenzie Dorr (Nashport, Ohio/Tri-Valley) took the cross and slipped a shot past the Mount keeper for the score, her sixth goal of the season.
The Pioneers stayed on the attack and just missed doubling its lead. Following a Purple Raider foul,
Amanda Augustyniak (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington Central) took a direct kick from 25-yards out that cleared the keeper but hit the cross bar.
Mount Union got on the board in the 25th minute. Carolyn Balzano 's thru ball found Nicole Lanese open in the 18-yard box. Lanese worked into some open space and fired a shot into the back of the net leveling the match at 1-1. The goal was Lanese's 13th of the season.
Dorr put the Pioneers back in front with her second goal of the match. Dorr dribbled into the 18-yard box and riffled a shot the deflected off of the keeper and into the goal for a 2-1 Marietta advantage.
Marietta held the lead until midway through the second half. Mount Union earned a corner kick, one of 10 in the match for the Raiders, and converted it for the equalizer. Balzano's corner was flicked by Olivia Evans and then headed home by Mallory Wahl for the goal.
The Pioneers had three chances from point blank range to end the match in the first overtime period. But Mount keeper Paige Freel denied all three. Sophie Moise dribbled around the left corner and into the six where she hit her first shot attempt.
Freel blocked the shot but the ball bounced back to Moise who pulled the trigger a second time. Once again Freel blocked the attempt. The ball bounced high and Barnes was there for the header, but Freel made her third straight save to preserve the draw.
Mount had a golden scoring opportunity in the final minute of the first extra period but Balzano's shot sailed wide and out of play.
Rebecca Tenney (Pepper Pike, Ohio/Orange) went the distance in goal for Marietta and made six saves. Freel recorded six saves as well.
The Purple Raiders outshot Marietta 20-14, but each team had eight shots on goal. Mount had a 10-5 advantage in corner kicks.
