NEW CONCORD, Ohio — The Marietta College volleyball team lost an Ohio Athletic Conference match at Muskingum University by the score of 3-1 Tuesday (Oct. 4) evening. The Pioneers slip to 14-9 overall and 0-2 in the OAC. Muskingum improves to 13-6 on the season and 1-1 in league play.
The Fighting Muskies posted game scores of 25-22, 22-25, 25-19 and 25-18 en route to the victory. Muskingum used a 6-1 run midway through the first game to open a six-point lead, 19-13. Marietta got within a point, 22-21, but the Muskies held on to take a one-game lead.
Game two was the reverse of game one. Marietta used a 7-1 run to build an early lead, 15-8. This time it was Muskingum's turn to battle back closing the deficit to one, 17-16, before the Pioneers managed to even the match at one game apiece.
After falling behind early, Muskingum scored six of the final points to win game three. In the final game, the Muskies closed with a 6-2 run for the victory.
Mallory Vodopich (Canton, Ohio/Massillon Perry) led all players with 15 kills.
Hunter Barnes (Duncan Falls, Ohio/Philo) added 12 kills and
Erica Denallo (Parma, Ohio/Independence) added nine.
Grace Haas (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) had a team-high 12 assists, while Vodopich served up three aces.
Denallo and
Emily Peters (Elyria, Ohio/Keystone) anchored the Pioneer defense with 16 and 15 digs, respectively.
Amber Mauric (Crystal, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's School) chipped in with 10 digs. At the net,
Darcy Irish (Lagrange, Ohio/Keystone) notched four blocks and Denallo had three.
After 16 straight matches on the road, the Pioneers return home to host John Carroll University on Saturday (Oct. 8) in a 1 p.m. match. Fans can follow all the Pioneer teams all year long at
