MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College women's soccer team finished the home portion of its schedule with a 3-0 loss to Otterbein University Wednesday (Oct. 26) afternoon at Marietta Field. The loss dropped Marietta to 7-6-5 overall and 1-3-4 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Otterbein improves to 10-5-1 on the season and 5-3-0 in the OAC.
Both teams failed to capitalize on early scoring opportunities. Otterbein keeper Andrea Pohlman stopped a close-range shot from
Raeli Barnes (Vincent, Ohio/Warren) in the fifth minute.
The Cardinals missed a couple chances midway through the first half when Madison Burchfield's header hit the post and then Pioneer keeper
Rebecca Tenney (Pepper Pike, Ohio/Orange) managed to recover in time to stop Annie Mosca's follow-up shot.
Otterbein got on the board in the 37th minute. Abbey Miltko sent a cross into the 6-yard box where Katie Exline slipped the ball inside the right post for her fifth goal of the season.
Tenney kept the score at 1-0 when she stopped an Otterbein penalty kick a minute later. The Pioneers were whistled for a foul in the box giving the Cardinals a penalty kick but Tenney swallowed up Alvi Shivley's attempt.
Otterbein took six corner kicks in the first half and used one to double its lead in the 43rd minute. Shivley placed a perfect corner on the near post where Madison Burchfield headed it home for the first of her two goals in the match.
Burchfield added an insurance goal in the 86th minute. She took possession of the ball inside the 18-yard box and beat Tenney with a shot into the lower right corner of the net. The goal was Burchfield's eighth of the season.
Tenney finished with three saves for the Pioneers, while Pohlman had two saves in the goal for the Cardinals.
