COLUMBUS, Ohio — Marietta College won its second straight Ohio Athletic Conference volleyball match with a 3-1 victory over Capital University Tuesday (Oct. 18) evening. The Pioneers improve to 17-11 overall and 2-4 in the OAC. Capital drops to 5-19 on the season and 1-5 in conference play.
Each of the four games were close the entire way but Marietta pulled out the win with game scores of 25-22, 25-22, 23-25 and 25-22. The Pioneers managed to open a five-point lead in the first game, 22-17. Capital got within a point, 23-22, before kills from
Hunter Barnes (Duncan Falls, Ohio/Philo) and
Mallory Vodopich (Canton, Ohio/Massillon Perry) secured the first game for Marietta.
The teams exchanged one and two point leads in the second game. The Pioneers used an 8-2 run to open a four-point advantage, 21-17. Once again the Crusaders battled to within a point, 22-21, before Marietta won four of the final five points for a 2-0 lead.
Marietta played from behind most of the third game. A Vodopich kill evened the game at 23-23, but Capital took the next two points and the game, 25-23.
Capital grabbed the lead in game four and built a five-point lead, 16-11. A Crusader serving error started a run of seven straight Pioneer points putting Marietta in front 18-16. The game was tied at 19 and again at 21 before the Pioneers took four of the last five points to secure the game and the match.
Vodopich finished with a double-double recording a team-best 15 kills to go along with 15 digs. She also added a pair of service aces.
Darcy Irish (Lagrange, Ohio/Keystone) and
Amanda Arrowood (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Groveport Madison) recorded 13 and 12 kills, respectively. Setter
Cassie Staten (Athens, Ohio/Athens) dished out a season-high 52 assists.
Erica Denallo (Parma, Ohio/Independence) anchored the defense with a match-high 22 digs. Staten chipped in with 10 digs, while
Emily Peters (Elyria, Ohio/Keystone) had eight digs and two aces.
