MARIETTA, Ohio — The University of Mount Union swept Marietta College 3-0 Tuesday (Oct. 11) evening in an Ohio Athletic Conference volleyball match. The Pioneers fall to 14-11 overall and 0-4 in the OAC. Mount Union improves to 13-6 on the season and 2-2 in league play.
Mount Union posted game scores of 25-20, 25-13 and 25-13 to earn the road victory. The Pioneers grabbed an early lead in the first game. A kill from
Darcy Irish (Lagrange, Ohio/Keystone) gave Marietta an 8-5 edge. The Purple Raiders responded with an 8-3 run to take a two-point lead, 13-11.
The Pioneers evened the game, 15-15, on a kill from
Delaney Dawson (Granville, Ohio/Granville). Mount scored the next six points for a 21-15 lead and went on to secure the game, 25-20.
Mount Union used big runs in each of the final two games to complete the sweep. The Raiders rattled off an 11-1 streak in game two and had a 11-3 run in the third.
Hunter Barnes (Duncan Falls, Ohio/Philo) and
Mallory Vodopich (Canton, Ohio/Massillon Perry) led the Pioneer attack with 11 and 10 kills, respectively.
Cassie Staten (Athens, Ohio/Athens) had a match-high 31 assists.
Defensively, Staten notched 11 digs, while Vodopich and
Emily Peters (Elyria, Ohio/Keystone) had 10 digs each.
