MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College led start to finish as the Pioneers defeated rival Muskingum University 69-52 Wednesday (Jan. 27) in Ohio Athletic Conference women's basketball action. The Pioneers improve to 10-8 overall and 4-7 in the OAC, while the Muskies fall to 4-14 and 0-11 in league play.
Amisha Herd (Zanesville, Ohio/West Muskingum) paced Marietta with 11 points. She also grabbed six rebounds and dished out four assists.
Megan Dixon (Londonderry, Ohio/Vinton County) equaled her career-high with 10 points. Dixon notched five boards and six assists.
Corrie Burkhardt (Zanesville, Ohio/Philo) just missed a double-double with nine points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
Mallory Taylor tallied 11 points to lead the Muskies. Olivia Besancon finished with 10 points and six rebounds. Leigha Moran pulled down a team-best nine rebounds.
Marietta jumped on top early and led 17-8 at the end of the first quarter. The Muskies outscored the Pioneers 20-15 in the second period but trailed by four, 32-28, at halftime.
Muskingum stayed within striking distance for most of the third quarter. The Pioneers used a 6-0 run late in the period to extend the lead to 10 points, 45-35, and were never really threatened again.
For the game, Marietta shot 41.9% (26-of-62) from the floor, 33.3% (6-of-18) from three-point range and 68.8% (11-of-16) at the free throw line. The Muskies were 20-of-57 (35.1%) from the floor, 2-of-16 (12.5%) behind the arc and 10-of-16 (62.5%) at the line.
The Pioneers outrebounded Muskingum by four, 42-38. The Muskies turned the ball over 14 times, while Marietta committed 11 turnovers.
