MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College escaped with a hard fought 3-2 win over visiting Thiel College Friday (Sept. 4) evening in the opening round of the annual River City Volleyball Tournament. The Pioneers improve to 2-0 overall, while the Tomcats drop to 0-1 on the season.
After scoring the first nine points of the match, it looked like Marietta was going to make quick work of the Tomcats. But Thiel shook off the early rust and forced the match to go all five sets. The Pioneers posted set scores of 25-22, 25-16, 15-25, 17-25 and 18-16.
Shauntiel Oliver-Smith (Elyria/Elyria) led the way for Marietta with a match-high 12 kills.
Devin Walter (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport) chipped in with 10 kills and
Erica Denallo (Independence/Independence) finished with nine.
Setter
Julia Moskaluk (Copley/Revere) notched 37 assists and had 15 digs. Libero
Mary Ervin (Lewis Center/Olentangy Orange) led all players with 28 digs. Denallo had 17 digs and
Mallory Vodopich (Canton/Massillon Perry) recorded 16.
Marietta wraps up play in the River City Tournament with a pair of matches on Saturday (Sept. 5). The Pioneers play Union College at 11:00 a.m. and Centre College at 1:00 p.m.
