MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College volleyball team split a pair of matches on Saturday (Sept.26) in Ban Johnson Arena. The Pioneers lost 3-0 to Ohio Wesleyan University and then beat Wilmington College in their Ohio Athletic Conference opener by the same score. The Pioneers are 7-8 overall and 1-0 in the OAC.
Ohio Wesleyan (17-1 overall) posted set scores of 25-12, 25-17 and 25-23 to sweep the Pioneers.
Devin Walter (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport) led the Marietta attack with eight kills.
Shauntiel Oliver-Smith (Elyria/Elyria) had six kills and
Erica Denallo (Independence/Independence) finished with five.
Mallory Vodopich (Canton/Massillon Perry) dished out 20 assists and had 13 digs. Libero
Mary Ervin (Lewis Center/Olentangy Orange) posted a team-high 16 digs and
Emily Peters (Elyria/Keystone) added 15. Oliver-Smith notched four blocks at the net.
In the final match of the day, Marietta downed Wilmington (0-14 overall, 0-1 OAC) 25-17, 25-21 and 25-22. Walter and
Darcy Irish (Lagrange/Keystone) led the Pioneers with 15 and 11 kills, respectively. Walter finished with a .303 attack percentage.
Erica Denallo (Independence/Independence) chipped in with nine kills, while Oliver-Smith added seven. Oliver-Smith committed just one attack error and recorded a .353 hitting percentage for the match.
Vodopich notched 36 assists and 10 digs. Ervin finished with 21 digs and Peters contributed 15.
