MARIETTA, Ohio — Waynesburg University came from behind to defeat Marietta College 2-1 Saturday (Sept. 26) morning in women's soccer action. The Yellow Jackets improve to 3-4 on the season, while the Pioneers drop to 0-9 overall.
The Pioneers jumped on top just over five minutes into the match.
Layne Archer (Duncan Falls/Philo) sent a corner kick into the 6-yard box where
Danielle Locher (Madison/Riverside) deflected it into the back of the net. The goal was Locher's first of the season.
Waynesburg leveled the match in the 35th minute. Following a foul on the Pioneers, Sam Nichols slipped the ensuing direct kick inside the left post to tie the match, 1-1. The scored remained knotted at Halftime.
The Yellow Jackets grabbed the lead early in the second half. Karleigh Murphey took a through ball from Sara Hackman inside the 18-yard box and beat Pioneer keeper
Rebecca Tenney (Pepper Pike/Orange) to the lower left corner of the net for the game winner in the 51st minute.
Tenney played the full 90 minutes in goal for Marietta and made nine saves. Ciara Scott went the distance in goal for Waynesburg and didn't have a save.
For the match, the Yellow Jackets outshot Marietta 15-2. Waynesburg held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.
