Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 9 Denison narrowly escapes Men's Soccer 2-1 in double overtime

GRANVILLE, Ohio — Kennedy Kommor slipped the ball inside the left post in the 101st minute as No. 9 ranked Denison University escaped with a 2-1 double overtime win over Marietta College Wednesday (Sept. 23) evening in men's soccer action.

"What a battle," Marietta head coach Joe Bergin said. "That was just a great college soccer match.  We are going to make some noise before the year is out."

Denison (7-0 overall) applied some early pressure smacking one off the crossbar on the first shot of the match. But, Marietta keeper Tyler Sholl (Johnstown/Big Walnut) was there to stop the follow up shot to record the first of his career-high 11 saves.

The Big Red finally got one by Sholl in the 41st minute. Kommor took a pass from Luis Zamora in the box and created enough space to get a shot by Sholl into the lower left corner of the net.

Marietta (4-4 overall) regrouped at the half and wasted no time in leveling the match at 1-1. Exactly 60 seconds into the second hald, Zach Johnson (Beckley, W.Va./Woodrow Wilson) sent a cross into the box where Taylor Reasoner (Hudson/Hudson) headed the ball inside the left post to tie the game, 1-1. It was Reasoner's fifth goal of the season.

Denison turned up the pressure after Reasoner's goal but Marietta's defense, and Sholl in particular, rose to the challenge. Sholl turned away six Big Red shots in the half to send the game into overtime.

Overtime belonged to the Big Red as the Denison players were determined to give head coach Rob Russo his 400th career victory. Denison outshot the Pioneers 3-0 in the first overtime and then need just one shot in the second extra frame to get the win.

50 seconds into the second overtime Charistain Keiper fed the ball to Kommor for the game winner.

For the match, Denison outshot the Pioneers 17-11. The Big Red held a 6-1 advantage in corners. Jack Thomas went the distance in goal for Denison making three saves, while Sholl made 11 saves.
