WOOSTER, Ohio — Freshman
Andy Rolfes (Cincinnati/Princeton) deflected a long direct kick into the back of the net for the game winner as Marietta College defeated the College of Wooster 2-1 in overtime Saturday (Sept. 12) afternoon. The victory was the 100th career win for Pioneer head coach
Joe Bergin.
A Wooster foul gave the Pioneers a direct kick from 40 yards out just under eight minutes into the first overtime period.
Kyle Rosselot (Twinsburg/Twinsburg) took the direct kick and found Rolfes open on the left post. Rolfes got a foot on the ball and beat the Wooster keeper for the goal.
After playing a scoreless first half, Marietta got on the board first in the 69th minute. Wooster's Lucas Hunt was issued a yellow card in the box giving the Pioneers a penalty kick. Senior
Taylor Reasoner (Hudson/Hudson) buried the shot in the lower right corner for a 1-0 MC lead.
BerginThe lead was short lived as the Fighting Scots leveled the match less than three minutes later. Marco Sapien scored for Wooster with an assist from Ben Deering. Pioneer keeper
Tyler Sholl (Johnstown/Big Walnut) got a hand on the shot but couldn't make the stop.
It appeared that Wooster grabbed the lead in the 84th minute but the Scots were whistled for offsides on the play.
Marietta outshot the Scots 18-7 including a 5-0 advantage in overtime. The Pioneers held a slim 8-6 edge in corner kicks. Sholl finished with two saves, while Scot Stacho made seven saves for Wooster.
