MARIETTA, Ohio — Bethany College downed Marietta College by the score of 3-2 Tuesday (Sept. 1) afternoon in women's soccer. The match was the season opener for both schools.
The Bison struck first in the 15th minute when Julie Slezak sent a cross into the box where Michaela Hinerman headed the ball off the crossbar and into the net. Hinerman would eventually score the game winner in the 59th minute for her second goal of the day.
Marietta leveled the match at 1-1 in the 19th minute.
Ashley Montgomery (Senecaville/Meadowbrook) took possession deep in Bethany territory and dribbled through the defense before firing a shot from the top of the 18-yard box into the lower right corner of the net for the goal.
Bethany reclaimed the lead when Brittany Fullbright's free kick glanced off the right post and into the back of the net in the 36th minute. The Bison led 2-1 at halftime.
The Pioneers again drew even. This time it was
Ali Kowal (Vermilion/Vermilion) with the goal. Kowal fired a shot from the top of the 18-yard box that was blocked by Bethany keeper Taylor Sasak. But Kowal's follow-up shot tied the match at 2-2.
Hinerman wasted no time in putting Bethany back in front. Less than a minute later Fullbright hit the crossbar with a shot and Hinerman buried the second shot from inside the 6-yard box for the game winner.
Sasak made 12 saves in net for the Bison, while
Rebecca Tenney (Pepper Pike/Orange) had four saves for the Pioneers. Marietta took 25 shots in the game to 17 for Bethany. The Bison had a 5-2 edge in corner kicks.
