Softball sweeps Baldwin Wallace

MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College swept an Ohio Athletic Conference softball doubleheader from Baldwin Wallace University Monday (March 30) afternoon at Marietta Field. The Pioneers are currently 10-10 overall and tied for first place in the league standings with a 3-1 record.

Marietta came from behind to win the first game by the score of 4-3. The Pioneers plated four runs in the first inning of game two en route to a 7-1 victory. The two losses drop Baldwin Wallace to 7-11 overall and 0-4 in the OAC.

BW jumped out to a 2-0 lead in game one. Sierra Bennett had an RBI single in the first, while Darcy Daniel drove in one in the third with a single to center field.

A defensive miscue by the Yellow Jackets led to MC's first run. Brianna Finck (New Lexington/Crooksville) reached on an error and came around to score on a double from Sarah Mayo (Proctorville/Chesapeake) in the home half of the third.

MC grabbed the lead in the bottom of the fourth. A pair of BW errors and four Pioneer hits plated two unearned runs. Brey Mays (Bloomingdale/Indian Creek) made it 4-2 with a run-scoring single in the fifth.

Senior Alexis O'Hair (Maumee/Maumee) (2-1) picked up the complete-game victory in the circle. O'Hair scattered six hits and allowed three runs. She walked three and struck out three.

Erica Morgan (3-5) took the loss. Morgan worked 6.0 innings and gave up four runs, one earned, on nine hits. She walked one and struck out four.

Mays finished 2-for-3 with two runs batted in for the Pioneers. Courtney Kerwood (Nashport/Tri-Valley) had a pair of singles and Mayo notched an RBI double.

Marietta kept the momentum rolling right into the nightcap. Kerwood and Rachel Montgomery (Massillon/Perry) each had RBI doubles in the bottom of the first as the Pioneers raced out to a 4-0 lead.

The Pioneers manufactured a run in the fourth inning to extend the lead to 5-0. Mays walked to lead off the inning and moved to second base on a sac bunt from Finck. Mays would come around to score when Mayo laced a single to center field.

Junior Lauren Larrick (Leesburg/Fairfield Local) (3-1) kept the BW hitters off balance for 5.0 innings. Larrick allowed one run on four hits as she induced 12 ground ball outs. Alison Kach (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) tossed the final 2.0 innings giving up three hits and striking out two.

The Yellow Jackets got on the board in the fifth when Mackenzie Brua lined a double into the right-center gap to lead off the inning. Brua moved to third on a groundout to the right side of the infield and then scored on a ground ball to the shortstop.

MC added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth inning. Bloom reached on a two-out double. Mayo followed with an RBI double of her own and then Kerwood smacked a triple to score Mayo.

Samantha Dostall (4-6) took the loss for the Yellow Jackets. Dostall pitched 6.0 innings and allowed seven runs on nine hits. She walked two and struck out three.

Kerwood finished with a double, triple and two RBI for the Pioneers, while Mayo was 2-for-3 with a double and two runs batted in. Bloom collected two hits including a double.

Marietta is right back in action on Tuesday (March 31) with a 3:00 p.m. OAC doubleheader at Otterbein University.
