Softball takes two from Denison

GRANVILLE, Ohio — The Marietta College softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader from Denison University Sunday (March 29) afternoon. The Pioneers posted scores of 10-2 and 6-4 to improve to 8-10 on the season. The Big Red falls to 7-7 overall.

Marietta score four runs over the first three innings and then exploded for five runs in the fifth to put the game away. The Pioneers banged out 12 hits in the first game doubling Denison's total.

Senior Alexis O'Hair (Maumee/Maumee) (1-1) went the distance in the circle for the win. She gave up two runs, one earned, on six hits. O'Hair walked one and struck out two.

Courtney Kerwood (Nashport/Tri-Valley) led the Pioneer offense with a pair of doubles and two runs batted in. Ariann Barile (Roaming Shores/Jefferson) finished 3-for-3, while Cierra Bloom (Dennison/Claymont) and Rachel Montgomery (Massillon/Perry) each had two hits and two RBI.

Lauren Secaras (4-1) took her first loss of the season giving up seven runs on eight hits in 4.1 innings of work. Secaras walked five and struck out four. Erin Laswell allowed three runs on four hits in 2.2 innings of relief.

In the nightcap Marietta built a 6-0 lead and then held on for the 6-4 win. Bloom smacked a two-run double and then scored on a triple off the bat of Kerwood for a 3-0 Pioneer lead in the third inning.

Brey Mays (Bloomingdale/Indian Creek) and Brianna Finck (New Lexington/Crooksville) added RBI doubles in the fourth inning and Sarah Mayo (Proctorville/Chesapeake) scored on a throwing error in the fifth for a 6-0 Marietta lead.

Denison got one run back in the home half of the fifth and then plated three runs in the sixth to get within two, 6-4.

Lauren Larrick (Leesburg/Fairfield Local) started in the circle for the Pioneers and tossed 2.0 shutout innings. Alison Kach (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) (3-3) came on in relief and worked 3.2 innings for the win. She allowed four runs on six hits. Kristina LaRocca (Strasburg/Strasburg Franklin) earned her first save by retiring all four hitters she faced.

Six of the Pioneers' nine hits went for extra bases. Finck had a pair of doubles, while Bloom, Mays and Kaitlin Klinchock (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) each had one two-bagger and Kerwood notched a triple.

Laswell (2-6) pitched the complete game for Denison. She gave up six runs on nine hits. Laswell walked one and struck out two.

Marietta hosts Baldwin Wallace University Monday (March 30) afternoon for a 3:00 p.m. Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader.
