WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — Two more close games resulted in another split for the Marietta College softball team Tuesday (March 10) at the Rebel Spring Games. The Pioneers lost to Thomas More College 5-3 and defeated the College of St. Scholastica 3-2. Marietta is now 2-4 on the season.
Thomas More (1-4 overall) score two runs in the fifth and sixth innings to come from behind for the win. The Saints jumped on top with a run in the top of the first, but Marietta scored a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth to grab the lead, 2-1.
An RBI triple from Jamie Ertel in the fifth tied the game, while Laura Finke put the Saints ahead with a run-scoring single. Thomas More extended its lead to 5-2 in the sixth.
Senior
Sarah Mayo (Proctorville/Chesapeake) led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a single to center and later sored on a double from
Alison Kach (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich). The Pioneers tried to rally in the seventh getting two runner on but couldn't get the RBI base hit.
MayoKristina LaRocca (Strasburg/Strasburg Franklin) (0-3) took the loss for Marietta. She threw 4.2 innings and gave up three runs on four hits. LaRocca walked four and struck out five.
Jocelyn White (Gibsonia, Pa./Hampton) pitched the final 2.1 innings and allowed two runs on one hit.
Mamee Salzer (1-2) went the distance for the Saints. She surrendered three runs on six hits with three walks and four strikeouts.
Mayo and
Courtney Kerwood (Nashport/Tri-Valley) each had two hits for the Pioneers.
Junior
Lauren Larrick (Leesburg/Fairfield Local) took a big step back from last season's injury with a complete-game victory over St. Scholastica (3-7 overall) in Marietta's second game of the day. Larrick tossed 7.0 innings and allowed two runs on just three hits. She walked three and struck out seven.
Marietta again fell behind early as St. Scholastics scored a run in the first inning. The Pioneers tied the game with one in the third. Mayo reached on a one-out single and would eventually score on an RBI-ground out off the bat of Kerwood.
RBI singles from
Cierra Bloom (Dennison/Claymont) and Kerwood in the fifth gave MC a 3-1 lead. St. Scholastics plated one in the fifth inning to get within a run, but Larrick retired the next seven hitters to secure the victory.
Chrisi Mizera (2-3) worked 7.0 innings in the losing effort. She allowed three runs on seven hits with three walks and two strikeouts.
Bloom and
Ashlee Ireland (Carroll/Bloom Carroll) collected two hits apiece in the game for the Pioneers.
After a day off on Wednesday, the Pioneers are back in action on Thursday (March 12) with games against Beloit College at 10:00 a.m. and Albion College at 12:15 p.m. Fans can follow the Pioneers all season long at
