WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — The Marietta College softball team split a pair of games Thursday (March 12) in the Rebel Spring Games. The Pioneers defeated Beloit College 6-3 and lost to Albion College 3-2. Marietta is now 3-5 on the season.
Against Beloit (0-7 overall), the Pioneers scored four runs in the bottom of the third inning and then added a couple of insurance runs in the fifth.
Brey Mays (Bloomingdale/Indian Creek),
Brianna Finck (New Lexington/Crooksville)e and
Cierra Bloom (Dennison/Claymont) each drove in runs in the third inning rally.
Bloom added another RBI on a sac fly in the fifth, while
Ashlee Ireland (Carroll/Bloom Carroll) drove in the Pioneers' final run with a single to center field.
Freshman
Jocelyn White (Gibsonia, Pa./Hampton) (1-0) picked up her first collegiate win working 5.0 innings. She gave up three runs on eight hits with a walk and two strikeouts.
Alison Kach (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) notched her first save with 2.0 innings of shutout relief.
Megan Salm (0-4) took the loss for Beloit. Salm pitched 6.0 innings and allowed six runs, three earned, on eight hits. She walked one and struck out one.
Mays and Caitlin Klincchock had two hits apiece for the Pioneers. Klinchock had a triple, Marietta's only extra base hit of the game.
Albion (3-6 overall) scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning and then held on for the win. Marietta outhit the Britons 11-5 and stranded 10 runners on base.
The Pioneers got one run in the third off an RBI single from
Rachel Montgomery (Massillon/Perry) and added another in the fourth on a base hit from
Sarah Mayo (Proctorville/Chesapeake). Marietta left runners on base every inning.
Junior
Lauren Larrick (Leesburg/Fairfield Local) (1-1) started the game in the circle for Marietta and was chased from the game before recording an out. Larrick was charged with three runs on two hits.
Kristina LaRocca (Strasburg/Strasburg Franklin) pitched 6.0 innings in relief and scattered three hits and didn't allow a run.
Ashley Butler (1-4) went the distance for Albion giving up two runs on 11 hits. She struck out two Pioneers.
Bloom went 3-for-4, while Mayo,
Courtney Kerwood (Nashport/Tri-Valley) and Montgomery each had two base hits.
Marietta wraps up its spring trip with two games on Friday (March 13). The Pioneers play Defiance College at 10:00 a.m. and Rowan University at 2:30 p.m. Fans can follow the Pioneers all season long at
