WILMINGTON, Ohio — Wilmington College defeated Marietta College by the score of 63-59 Saturday (Feb. 7) afternoon in Ohio Athletic Conference women's basketball. The Quakers improve to 12-9 overall and 7-7 in the OAC, while the Pioneers fall to 7-14 on the season and 3-11 in league play.
Jessica Brogan (Cincinnati/Anderson) and
Jordanna Rauch (Fleming/Warren) each score 12 points to lead Marietta. Brogan grabbed a team-high seven rebounds and Rauch sank four shot from three-point range.
Ashley Frasure (Logan/Logan) also pulled down seven boards to go along with five blocked shots, while
Heather Booth (Newport/Frontier) dished out five assists.
Wilmington's Courtney Tucker led all scorers with 18 points. She finished with six rebounds, four assists and four steals. Brittaney Jefferson scored 11 points and Hannah Haeseker grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.
Featuring three ties and 10 lead changes, the game was a back and forth affair. Neither team led by more than eight points as both schools had sub-par shooting performances.
Marietta used a 14-5 run late in the first half to take its biggest lead of the game, 40-32, with 1:29 left in the period. The Pioneers took a four-point advantage into halftime, 43-39.
The Pioneers maintained a slim lead throughout the first 10 minutes of the second half. Wilmington took its first lead of the period, 54-53, when Kirsten Glick hit one of two free throws with 8:36 remaining.
Marietta scored four straight points to go back in front before Jefferson sank a three-pointer for the Quakers to knot the game at 57 with 5:36 left on the clock. Both team went ice cold and nobody scored for nearly five minutes. Haeseker ended the drought with a pair of free throws with 47 seconds left.
RauchFollowing a Pioneer miss, Tucker scored on a layup to put Wilmington ahead by four, 61-57, with 11 ticks left on the clock.
Amisha Herd (Zanesville/West Muskingum) scored for the Pioneers to cut the deficit to 61-59, but Marietta was forced to foul and Haeseker connected on two more free throws to ice the game.
For the game, Marietta shot 35.9% (23-of-64) from the floor, 42.9% (9-of-21) from three-point range and 80.0% (4-of-5) at the line. Wilmington was 24-of-67 (35.8%) from the floor, 8-of-24 (33.3%) behind the arc and 7-of-13 (53.8%) at the line.
The Quakers edged Marietta on the glass 44-43. The Pioneers committed 18 turnovers, while Wilmington turned the ball over 14 times.
