MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College women's basketball team defeated the University of Mount Union by the score 73-62 Wednesday (Feb. 11) evening in Ban Johnson Arena. The Pioneers are 8-14 on the season and 4-11 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Mount Union is also 8-14 and 4-11.
The Purple Raiders scored the first two points of the game for their only lead of the night. Marietta responded with a 9-0 run and never looked back. The Pioneers led by as many as 19 points, 38-19, in the first half. Marietta took a 43-28 advantage into halftime.
Marietta opened the second half with a 10-4 run extending its lead to 21 points; it's biggest of the night. The Pioneers maintained a comfortable lead throughout the half. A late 8-0 run from Mount Union got the Purple Raiders within nine, 71-62, with 38 seconds remaining.
Sophomore
Morgan Liedtke (Lowell/Fort Frye) led four Pioneers in double figures with 17 points. Freshman
Brooke Borich (Beverly/Fort Frye) scored 13 points, while
Heather Booth (Newport/Frontier) and
Ashley Frasure (Logan/Logan) finished with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Frasure and
Jessica Brogan (Cincinnati/Anderson) each grabbed seven rebounds.
BorichMount's Nancy Osborne led all scorers with 21 points hitting 4-of-4 from three-point range. Chandler Moore chipped in with 11 points and five rebounds. Abby Wemhoff pulled down six boards.
For the game, Marietta shot 43.9% (25-of-57) from the floor, 36.8% (7-of-19) from three-point range and 64.0% (16-of-25) at the free throw line. The Raiders hit 20-of-58 (34.5%) from the floor, 8-of-15 (53.3%) behind the arc and 14-of-20 (70.0%) at the line.
The Pioneers outrebounded Mount Union 41-38. The Purple Raiders committed 17 turnovers, while Marietta turned the ball over 15 times.
