Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

No. 24 John Carroll escapes with 69-61 win over Women's Basketball

MARIETTA, Ohio — Old Man Winter blew through Southern Ohio knocking out power over most of Marietta and delaying the start of Saturday's (Feb. 14) women's basketball game. After a two-hour delay No. 24 ranked John Carroll University defeated Marietta College by the score of 69-61.

The Blue Streaks improve to 20-3 overall and 13-3 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Marietta drops to 8-15 on the season and 4-12 in league play.

The delay didn't seem to bother JCU as the Blue Streaks raced out to a 10-2 lead getting several fast break buckets. John Carroll extended its lead to nine points on several occasions but couldn't shake the Pioneers.

Marietta was able to take advantage of several Blue Streak turnovers and some timely offensive rebounds to stay within striking distance. The Pioneers scored 24 points off of turnovers and second chance baskets to trail by one, 32-31, at the break.

Senior Jessica Brogan (Cincinnati/Anderson) drained a three-pointer to start the second half to give Marietta its first lead of the game. JCU managed to tie the score three times in the first six minutes only to see the Pioneers reclaim the lead each time.  A three-pointer from Shmoo Pryor with 13:13 left on the clock gave John Carroll the lead, 49-46. The Blue Streaks never trailed again.

Brogan hit a pair of free throws to make it a three-point game, 64-61, with 52 seconds remaining. JCU's Emily Taylor responded with a huge three-pointer that essentially iced the game. Marietta missed a trey on its next possession and was forced to foul. Erin Mog hit both free throws for the final margin.

Brogran led all scorers with 21 points to go along with seven rebounds. Senior Heather Booth (Newport/Frontier) chipped in with 14 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Freshman Amisha Herd (Zanesville/West Muskingum) finished with 12 points and seven boards.

Pryor led four Blue Streaks in double figures with 16 points. Taylor scored 15 points, while Katlyn Spahar had 12 points and seven rebounds. Beth Switzler added 11 points and seven boards, while Sarah Cairnie grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.

For the game, Marietta shot 37.1% (23-of-62) from the floor, 6.7% (1-of-15) from three-point range and 73.7% (14-of-19) at the line. John Carroll was 23-of-54 (42.6%) from the floor, 4-of-9 (44.4%) behind the arc and 19-of-26 (73.1%) at the free throw line.
