MARIETTA, Ohio — Capital University overcame a frigid first half shooting performance to come from behind and defeat Marietta College by the score of 67-55 Wednesday (Feb. 4) evening in women's basketball action. The loss drops Marietta to 7-13 overall and 3-10 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. The Crusaders improve to 11-9 on the season and 7-6 in the OAC.
Capital struggled to put the ball in the basket in the first half shooting 25% from the floor and 46% at the free throw line. Marietta was just a little bit better hitting 36% from the floor and led by six, 29-23, at the break.
In the second half, the Crusaders got a little hotter converting 47% of their field goal attempts. In addition, Capital took advantage of 11 Marietta turnovers in the second half to outscore the Pioneers by 18 points in the period. 27 of Capital's points were scored off of Pioneer turnovers.
Senior
Heather Booth (Newport/Frontier) led the Pioneers with 14 points. Freshman
Brooke Borich (Beverly/Fort Frye) chipped in with 11 points. Senior
Jessica Brogan (Cincinnati/Anderson) grabbed a game-high seven rebounds, while Booth,
Candice Alexander (Fairborn/Fairborn) and
Amisha Herd (Zanesville/West Muskingum) each pulled down six boards.
BorichJenna Erwin scored 17 points off the bench to lead the Crusaders. Kristen Thompson had 14 points and Jaren Francis finished with 10 points and five rebounds. Simonne Gage notched a game-high seven boards.
For the game, Marietta shot 36.2% (21-of-58) from the floor, 27.3% (3-of-11) from three-point range and 58.8% (10-of-17) at the line. Capital was 24-of-66 (36.4%) from the floor, 4-of-10 (40.0%) behind the arc and 15-of-25 (60.0%) at the line.
Marietta dominated the boards outrebounding Capital 51-36. The Pioneers committed 20 turnovers, while the Crusaders turned the ball over just five times.
