MARIETTA, Ohio — Free throw shooting was the difference in the game as Washington and Jefferson College defeated Marietta College 74-64 Wednesday (Dec. 30) in women's basketball action. The Presidents improve to 8-2 on the season, while Marietta falls to 9-3 on the season.
In a game that featured 61 free throws, Washington and Jefferson sank 20-of-24 (83.3%). The Pioneers converted just 22-of-37 (59.5%) of their freebies.
The Presidents led 17-14 at the end of the first quarter. Marietta battled back to even the score at 37 heading into halftime.
W&J outscored the Pioneers by 10 in the third quarter taking a 64-54 lead.
Ashley Barker (Mogadore, Ohio/Mogadore) hit a pair of free throws to cut the deficit to three, 66-63, with 4:43 left in the game. But Marietta managed just one more point in the game as the Presidents pulled away down the stretch.
Amisha Herd (Zanesville, Ohio/West Muskingum) was the lone Pioneer to reach double figures finishing with 14 points.
Corrie Burkhardt (Zanesville, Ohio/Philo) scored nine points and grabbed nine rebounds.
Shay Lett (Chillicothe, Ohio/Chillicothe) hit a trio of three-pointers and finished with nine points.
Taylor Cortazzo sank five three-pointers and led all scorers with 21 points. Amirah Moore scored 20 points and Beka Belhy chipped in with 16 points. Belhy and Danielle Parker each pulled down nine boards.
For the game, Marietta shot 36.0% (18-of-50) from the floor, 33.3% (6-of-18) from three-point range and 59.5% (22-of-37) at the line. W&J was 24-of-61 (39.3%) from the floor, 6-of-18 (33.3%) behind the arc and 20-of-24 (83.3%) at the line.
The Presidents outrebounded Marietta 44-35. MC turned the ball over 20 times, while Washington and Jefferson finished with 18 tunrovers.
