ADA, Ohio — No. 20-ranked Ohio Northern University outscored Marietta College by 30 points in the second and third quarters en route to a 92-49 win Saturday (Jan. 9) afternoon in Ohio Athletic Conference women's basketball action. The Polar Bears improve to 11-2 overall and 6-0 in the OAC, while the Pioneers slip to 9-4 overall and 3-3 in conference play.
Sophomore
Brooke Borich (Beverly, Ohio/Fort Frye) was the lone Pioneer to reach double figures finishing with 10 points.
Morgan Liedtke (Lowell, Ohio/Fort Frye) and
Amisha Herd (Zanesville, Ohio/West Muskingum) scored eight and seven points, respectively.
Corrie Burkhardt (Zanesville, Ohio/Philo) led MC on the glass with six rebounds.
Karissa Steffas led ONU with 16 points. Carly Thomas and Amy Bullimore each chipped in with 10 markers. Brooke Espenschied grabbed a game-high 10 boards and dished out six assists.
Marietta hung with the nationally ranked Polar Bears in the first quarter trailing by just two, 22-20, at the end of the first period. Ohio Northern got rolling in the second quarter and took a 43-26 lead into halftime.
ONU took advantage of Marietta's shooting woes in the second half to pull away. The Pioneers shot 22% in the final 20 minutes as the Polar Bears outpaced Marietta 49-23 after the intermission.
For the game, Marietta shot 27.1% (16-of-59) from the floor, 31.8% (7-of-22) from three-point range and 62.5% (10-of-16) at the free throw line. The Polar Bears hit 33-of-61 (54.1%) from the floor, 5-of-13 (38.5%) behind the arc and 21-of-26 (80.8%) at the line.
The Polar Bears outrebounded Marietta 46-30. The Pioneers turned the ball over 17 times, while ONU committed 11 turnovers.
