DANVILLE, Ky. — The Marietta College women's basketball team defeated Rhodes College (Tenn.) by the score of 65-51 Friday (Nov. 20) evening in the first round of the Lee's Famous Recipe/Hampton Inn Classic being hosted by Centre College. The Pioneers improve to 2-0 on the season and will face the host Colonels Saturday for the championship.
After getting off to a slow start and trailing 13-9 at the end of the first quarter, Marietta doubled up on Rhodes in the second quarter. The Pioneers outscored the Lynx 22-11 in the second period and led 31-24 at halftime.
Marietta pulled away in the second half leading by as many as 20 points, 62-42. The Pioneers never trailed after halftime.
Three Pioneers scored in double figures led by
Amisha Herd (Zanesville, Ohio/West Muskingum) and
Brooke Borich (Beverly, Ohio/Fort Frye) who both finished with 15 points.
Megan Dixon (Londonderry, Ohio/Vinton County) came off the bench to score 10 points nailing a pair of three-pointers.
Herd paced Marietta with eight rebounds.
Ashley Frasure (Logan, Ohio/Logan) grabbed seven boards, while
Corrie Burkhardt (Zanesville, Ohio/Philo) had six. Frasure also blocked five Lynx shots.
Symone Daniels led all scoreers with 17 points for Rhodes. She also pulled down a team-high eight rebounds. Bailey Kramer chipped in with 10 points.
For the game, Marietta shot 42.0% (21-of-50) from the floor, 26.7% (4-of-15) from three-point range and 61.3% (19-of-31) at the line. Rhodes was 17-of-58 (29.3%) from the floor, 3-of-15 (20.0%) behind the arc and 14-of-19 (73.7%) at the line.
Marietta held a slim edge on the glass outrebounding the Lynx 40-37. The Pioneers forced 21 turnovers, while committing 20.
