Men's Soccer shuts out Wilmington 2-0

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College men's soccer team opened the Ohio Athletic Conference portion of its schedule with a 2-0 shutout of Wilmington College Saturday (Oct. 3) afternoon at Marietta Field. The Pioneers improve to 6-5 overall equaling their win total from a year ago. Wilmington falls to 3-8 overall and 0-1 in the OAC.

Taylor Reasoner (Hudson/Hudson) continued his torrid scoring streak scoring both of the Pioneer goals for his third multi-goal match of the season. His nine goals on the season is second in the OAC and only one behind the league leader.

Marietta jumped on the Quakers right from the opening whistle. The Pioneers had several good scoring chances in the early going but failed to convert. Wilmington keeper Nick Baker made several saves to keep Marietta off the board.

Reasoner finally broke the scoreless tie in the 38th minute. Luke Saunders (Groveport/Groveport Madison) dropped the ball into Reasoner in the middle of the 18-yard box. Reasoner turned an fired a shot inside the left post for what would be the game winner.

The score remained 1-0 at the half with Marietta dominating the statistics. The Pioneers took all nine shots in the first half and had an 8-1 edge in corner kicks.

Wilmington nearly tied the game early in the second half. Niklas Martennson fired a shot that Marietta keeper Tyler Sholl (Johnstown/Big Walnut) stopped but failed to control. With Sholl on the ground, Grady Garrison was there for the follow up shot but sent it high over the crossbar.

Marietta made it 2-0 in the 71st minute. The Quakers were whistled for a foul inside the box giving the Pioneers a penalty kick. Reasoner took the penalty and rifled a shot that Baker got a hand on but the ball deflected off the crossbar and into the net.

Sholl finished with five saves and his league-leading third shutout of the season. The Pioneer back line of Tyler Bro (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg), Robert Felton (Wheeling, W.Va./The Linsly School), Kyle Rosselot (Twinsburg/Twinsburg) and Noah Laliberty (Scott Depot, W.Va./Winfield) frustrated Wilmington's forwards all afternoon.

For the match, Marietta outshot the Quakers 17-8. The Pioneers took 13 corner kicks to only four for Wilmington. Baker had eight saves in goal for WC.

Marietta travels to Mount Union on Tuesday (Oct. 6) for a 7:00 p.m. match. Fans can follow all the Pioneer teams all year long at pioneers.marietta.edu. You can also follow the Pioneers on Facebook at facebook.com/MariettaCollege and @MariettaPioneer on Twitter and Instagram.
