MARIETTA, Ohio — Otterbein University defeated Marietta College by the score of 4-1 Tuesday (Oct. 27) afternoon in women's soccer action. The Cardinals improve to 9-6-1 overall and 5-2-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Marietta slips to 0-18 on the season and 0-8 in the OAC.
Otterbein struck for two goals in the first few minutes of the game and then held the Pioneers' attack in check. Alex Ancona curved a corner kick into the net in the third minute of the match. Several minutes later Megan McCabe headed home a cross from Madison Burchfield for a 2-0 lead just 7:26 into the match.
The Pioneers sliced the lead in half when
Ali Kowal (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion) scored her third goal of the season in the 31st minute.
Layne Archer (Duncan Falls, Ohio/Philo) sent a long through to Kowal at the top of the 18-yard box. Kowal worked around a defender and fired a shot into the lower left corner of the goal.
A controversial goal in the 74th minute extended Otterbein's lead. Ancona sent a corner kick into the box where McCabe got a foot on it. It appeared that Marietta's defense cleared the ball off the back line before it crossed the line, but the assistant referee signaled for the goal.
Otterbein added a late insurance goal in the 89th minute off a direct kick. Following a Marietta foul just outside the 18-yard box, Ancona nailed a perfect kick into the upper left corner of the net for her second goal of the match.
Marietta keeper
Rebecca Tenney (Pepper Pike, Ohio/Orange) recorded 12 saves in the match, while Otterbein's Dana Strimbu notched a pair of stops. The Cardinals outshot Marietta 22-4 for the match and held a 14-1 edge in corner kicks.
