MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College volleyball team snapped a five-match skid with a dominating 3-1 victory over visiting Capital University Tuesday (Oct. 20) evening in Ban Johnson Arena. Marietta posted set scores of 25-17, 25-19, 18-25 and 27-25 improving to 9-14 overall and 2-4 in the Ohio Athletic Conference.

Capital (6-20 overall, 1-5 OAC) jumped out to an early 9-3 lead in the first set before the Pioneers started to roll. Marietta responded with a 12-4 run taking a 15-13 lead. MC finished the set with a .310 attack percentage committing just four errors.

Marietta never trailed in the second set and appeared to be on its way to a sweep. The Crusaders refused to go quietly scoring the first five points of the third set. Capital built a 12-4 lead and cruised to the 25-18 win forcing a fourth stanza.

In the fourth set, Marietta had leads of 15-10 and 23-16 but struggled to put the Crusaders away. Seven straight Capital points leveled the set, 23-23. The Pioneers had three match points before Julia Moskaluk (Copley, Ohio/Revere) ended the match with a service ace.

Devin Walter (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport) and Mallory Vodopich (Canton, Ohio/Massillon Perry) finished with 11 and 10 kills, respectively, to lead the Pioneer attack. Vodopich added three aces, 14 assists and 15 digs. Walter notched a .267 attack percentage.

Shauntiel Oliver-Smith (Elyria, Ohio/Elyria), Amanda Arrowood (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Groveport Madison) and Darcy Irish (Lagrange, Ohio/Keystone) each had seven kills in the match. Oliver-Smith had a team-best .375 attack percentage, while Arrowood and Irish each had a pair of block assists.

Moskaluk recorded 25 assists, three aces and eight digs. Libero Mary Ervin (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy Orange) led Marietta with 17 digs and Erica Denallo (Independence, Ohio/Independence) added 15 digs.
