Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Capital grinds out a 6-3 win over Men's Soccer

MARIETTA, Ohio — Capital University men's soccer scored twice in the first six minutes of the match en route to a key 6-3 Ohio Athletic Conference win over Marietta College Tuesday (Oct. 20) afternoon. The Crusaders improve to 6-8-1 overall and 4-1-1 in the OAC, while Marietta falls to 8-8 overall and 3-3 in conference play.

Capital wasted no time taking the lead. Josh McDaniel hit a laser from the top of the 18-yard box. He went upper 90 just inside the left post for his third goal of the season.

Marietta leveled the match less than two minutes later. Noah Laliberty (Scott Depot, W.Va./Winfield) threaded a perfect cross through the Capital defense to the top of the six-yard box. Andy Rolfes (Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton) took the pass and fired a shot into the lower left corner of the net for his fifth goal of the fall.

Capital, who entered the match with a one point lead on Marietta in the OAC standings, broke the match wide open with five straight goals before halftime. The Crusaders led 6-1 at the break.

Calvin Saundrs, Jacob Pulliam, Marlo Suarez, Sheldon Gordon and Tyler Washington each found the back of the net for Capital.

The Pioneers regrouped at halftime and tallied a pair of early goals in the second half to cut the deficit to 6-3. Adam Fox (Charleston, W.Va./Charleston Catholic) scored off a corner kick in the 51st minutes and Ray Rott (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island) took advantage of keeper misplay to tap one in in the 55th minute.

The match quickly devolved from there. With nine cautions and 34 totals fouls, neither team could mount much of an attack for the remainder of the game.

Tyler Sholl (Johnstown, Ohio/Big Walnut) started in goal for the Pioneers and made three saves in the first 45 minutes. Sebastian Parra (Bexley, Ohio/Bexley) played the second half and recorded two saves. Justin Niswonger had three saves in the first period for Capital, while Logan Wiedmann made one save in the final 45 minutes.

For the match, Capital outshot the Pioneers 17-13. Marietta held a slim 2-1 edge in corner kicks.
