MARIETTA, Ohio – Sophomore
RaNeal Ewing (Westerville/Dublin Scioto) scored 14 second-half points including a three-pointer from near half court as the shot clock was expiring to lead Marietta College to a 76-56 win over Heidelberg University Saturday (Feb. 8) afternoon.
Marietta (17-4 overall, 12-2 OAC) jumped out to a big lead early in the game. A layup from Ewing with 14:36 left in the first half put the Pioneers in front by 13 points, 18-5.
Heidelberg (5-15, 1-12 OAC) responded with a 15-2 run to knot the game at 20. Senior Keith Mackie fueled the run with nine points including a four-point play that saw him drain a three-pointer and then convert the free throw.
The Pioneers fought back and took a 37-31 lead into halftime.
The second half was pretty much all Marietta, and more specifically, Ewing. He hit 6-of-8 from the floor, including a pair of treys, in the second period. A
Brennan McKean (Jeromesville/Northwestern) three-pointer with 1:42 left in the game gave Marietta its biggest lead of the day, 76-54.
McKean finished as the game's leading scorer with 19 points. He connected on 7-of-10 shot attempts and sank five from behind the arc. Ewing scored 18 points and dished out five assists.
Garret Stephenson chipped in with 14 points, while
Andy Stegman (Wheelersburg/Wheelersburg) dominated the defensive end of the floor for the Pioneers. Stegman grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds and blocked four Heidelberg shots, both career highs.
The Student Princes were led by Mackie's 14 points. Deonte Holder scored 11 points and Doug Waldmannstetter added 10 points.
Marietta won the battle of the boards, 39-31 and both teams committed 11 turnovers in the game.
The Pioneers shot 46.4% (26-of-56) from the floor, 38.5% (10-of-26) from three-point range and a perfect 100.0% (14-of-14) at the line. Heidelberg was 21-of-61 (34.4%) from the floor, 6-of-29 (20.7%) behind the arc and 8-of-9 (88.9%) at the line.
