BETHANY, W.Va. — Marietta College scored the first 16 points of the game and never trailed as the Pioneers defeated Bethany College 78-67 Tuesday (Nov. 25) evening in women's basketball action. Marietta improves to 2-1 on the season and Bethany slips to 3-2 overall.
Senior
Candice Alexander (Fairborn/Fairborn) led three Pioneers in double figures with 17 points. She grabbed four rebounds and dished out three assists.
Heather Booth (Newport/Frontier) finished with 13 points and five boards, while freshman
Brooke Borich (Beverly/Fort Frye) chipped in with 12 points.
Jessica Brogan (Cincinnati/Anderson) pulled down a team-high nine rebounds.
Both teams got off to a slow start with
Emily Sabatino (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) hitting a pair of free throws for the first points of the game at the 16:47 mark. Bethany's scoring troubles continued allowing the Pioneers to build a 16-0 lead. The Bison finally got on the board on a layup by Kelsea Daugherty over seven minutes into the first half.
Bethany slowly worked its way back into the game and trailed by only four points, 34-30, at halftime. Brogan scored the first five points of the second half to push Marietta's lead back to nine points, 39-30.
On the strength of Daugherty's 10 second half points, the Bison managed to knot the score at 51-51 with 10:07 remaining in the game. Marietta responded with a 13-3 run, capped by a Borich layup, to push the lead back to 10 points, 64-54, with 6:29 left on the clock.
Daugherty, a graduate of Frontier High School, had a game-high 19 points and 11 rebounds. Hayley Holenka finished with 14 points and six boards.
Marietta returns home to host the 30th annual Jim Meagle Turkey Shoot sponsored by BSN Sports this Saturday and Sunday (Nov. 29-30). The Pioneers play Miami University Middletown on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
