MARIETTA, Ohio — 15 different Pioneers scored as the Marietta College Women's Basketball team defeated Miami University Middletown by the score of 88-57 Saturday (Nov. 29) in the 30th annual Jim Meagle Turkey Shoot sponsored by BSN Sports. Marietta improves to 3-1 on the season, while Miami falls to 3-4 overall.
Following an early 2-2 tie, Marietta scored 12 straight points and led 14-2 just over five minutes into the game. A jumper from
Amisha Herd (Zanesville/West Muskingum) with 2:54 left in the opening period put the Pioneers ahead by 26, 48-22. Marietta led 52-28 at halftime.
The ThunderHawks trimmed the margin to 22 points early in the second half but could get no closer. Marietta pushed the lead to as many as 33 points on two occasions.
Senior
Heather Booth (Newport/Frontier) led Marietta with 12 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore
Morgan Liedtke (Lowell/Fort Frye) scored 12 points off the bench and dished out a game-high five assists.
Senior
Sierra Sigman (Chillicothe/Zane Trace) chipped in with 10 points, while
Jessica Brogan (Cincinnati/Anderson) and
Jenna Andersen (Columbus/Thomas Worthington) each had six rebounds.
Shaeyla Givens paced the ThunderHawks with a game-best 19 points, Riian McCray-Smith pulled down 15 rebounds.
For the game, Marietta shot 50.0% (37-of-74) from the floor, 25.0% (4-of-16) from three-point range and 66.7% (10-of-15) from the free throw line. Miami Middletown was 18-of-62 (29.0%) from the floor, 2-of-11 (18.2%) behind the arc and 19-of-30 (63.3%) at the charity stripe.
Marietta outrebounded the ThunderHawks 48-42. Miami Middletown committed 19 turnovers, while the Pioneers turned the ball over 12 times.
Marietta will play in the Turkey Shoot Championship Game Sunday (Nov. 30) at 3:00 p.m. against the winner of Denison vs. Carnegie Mellon.
