MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College erupted for 62 second half points to rout Waynesburg University 96-44 Tuesday (Nov. 18) evening in men's basketball action. The Pioneers remain perfect on the young season with a 3-0 record, while the Yellow Jackets slip to 0-2 overall.
Marietta scored its first points of the game just over six minutes into the first half. Despite the uncharacteristically slow start, the Pioneers used an 18-4 run late in the opening period to lead 34-22 at halftime.
Any hopes Waynesburg had of getting back into the game during the second half quickly disappeared. Marietta scored the first eight points after the intermission and never looked back.
The Pioneers put on a shooting clinic sinking nearly 65% of its shot attempts in the second half. Marietta was even deadlier from three-point range connecting of 12-of-17 attempts from behind the arc, good for 70.6%.
Sophomore point guard
Keith Richardson (Englewood/Northmont) led five Pioneers in double figures with 14 points. Richardson scored 12 points in the first half and dished out four assists in the game. Junior
A.J. Ireland (Carroll/Bloom-Carroll) was 4-for-4 from three-point range in the second half and finished with 12 points.
Senior
Garrett Stephenson (West Milton/Milton-Union) scored 11 points, while
Andy Dollman (Vienna, W.Va./Parkersburg) and
Luis Garcia (Miami, Fla./Florida Christian) each chipped in with 10 points.
Andy Stegman (Wheelersburg/Wheelersburg) and
Jack Thome (Chagrin Falls/Chagrin Falls) led Marietta with seven rebounds apiece. Thome also had a career-high nine points.
Waynesburg struggled to score all night long and failed to have a player reach double figures. BJ Durham led the Yellow Jackets with nine points. Byrum Louco and Thomas Ellis each grabbed six rebounds.
Marietta dominated the glass for the third straight game outrebounding Waynesburg 48-35. On the season, the Pioneers are averaging 16.7 more rebounds per game than their opponents.
Marietta shot 46.4% (32-of-69) from the floor, 48.6% (18-of-37) from three-point range and 73.7% (14-of-19) at the line. Waynesburg was 10-of-50 (20.0%) from the floor, 3-of-12 (25.0%) behind the arc and 21-of-30 (70.0%) at the line.
After opening the season with three straight home games, Marietta hits the road for its next six games. The Pioneers play at LaRoche College on Saturday (Nov. 22) at 3:00 p.m.
