Volleyball splits pair of five set matches

LEXINGTON, Ky. — Marietta College split a pair of nonconference volleyball matches Saturday (Oct. 4) afternoon. The Pioneers lost in five sets to Anderson University and then defeated Transylvania University in five sets. Marietta improves to 8-12 on the season.

Anderson posted set scores of 25-18, 25-17, 16-25, 20-25 and 15-12 to defeat the Pioneers. The Ravens used a balance attack with four players recording double digit kills to go along with 11 service aces.

Juniors Devin Walter (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport) and Chloe janson led the Marietta attack. Walter had 16 kills and a .441 attack percentage, while Janson notched 15 kills and three blocks. Fellow junior Kennedy Clyde (Chagrin Falls/Hawken School) chipped in with nine kills and 11 digs.

Senior setter Laura Mauer (Terre Haute, Ind./North) dished out 49 assists and also had four blocks and 11 digs. Libero Mary Ervin (Lewis Center/Olentangy Orange) and freshman Erica Denallo (Independence/Independence) each had 15 digs.

Marietta downed Transylvania with set scores of 25-18, 22-25, 20-25, 25-22 and 15-13. Denallo had another impressive performance with 21 digs and a .486 attack percentage. She also had a team-high five blocks.

Mauer had 54 assists, while Ervin and Alexis Callaway (Portage, Mich./Portage Central) notched 28 and 21 digs, respectively.
