MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta college freshman goalkeeper
Rebecca Tenney (Pepper Pike/Orange) posted her first career shutout as the Pioneers defeated Wilmington College by the score of 1-0 Saturday (Oct. 4) afternoon in the Ohio Athletic Conference opener for both schools. Tenney made eight saves to preserve the clean sheet.
Marietta (1-9-1 overall, 1-0 OAC) tallied the lone goal of the match in the 27th minute. Freshman
Mo Ruff (Dublin/Columbus School for Girls) sent a through ball into the 18-yard box where sophomore
Layne Archer (Duncan Falls/Philo) collected the pass and slipped the ball past the Wilmington keeper for the game winner. The goal was Archer's third of the season.
Wilmington (6-5 overall, 0-1 OAC) went on the attack early getting several shots off in the first half. Tenney made seven of her eight saves in the first period. In addition to the superb play in net, the Pioneer back line of
Danielle Chirdon (Newark/Lakewood),
Shelby Willis (Moreland Hills/Orange),
Cassie Wint (Shreve/Wooster) and Ruff kept the Quakers off the scoreboard.
Each team took 11 shots in the match with Wilmington holding a slight 8-6 edge in shots on goal. The Quakers also took four corner kicks to Marietta's two.
Wilmington keeper Ana Hosler notched five saves in the match.
