WILMINGTON, Ohio — Marietta College won a thrilling five-set match at Wilmington College Friday (Oct. 3) night in Ohio Athletic Conference volleyball action. The Pioneers improve to 7-11 overall and 1-1 in the OAC, while the Quakers slip to 2-17 on the season and 0-2 in the conference.
Wilmington won the first set 25-20 with a solid .244 attack percentage. The Pioneers bounced back to win the next two sets by the scores of 25-19 and 27-15. The fans in attendance were treated to an electrifying forth set.
The Quakers needed a win in the fourth to force a deciding fifth set. Neither team led by more than a couple of points in the fourth set as Wilmington escaped with the 33-31 win. Back-to-back kills from Ashley Miller and Catlin Pauley gave WC the final two points in the set.
In the fifth, and deciding set, Marietta played from behind for most of the set but kept the Quakers within striking distance. Wilmington led 12-11 before the Pioneers tallied four straight points to win the match. A kill from junior
Kennedy Clyde (Chagrin Falls/Hawken School) sealed the victory for Marietta.
Junior middle blocker
Chloe Janson (Lawrenceburg, Ind./East Central) dominated play at the net both offensively and defensively. Janson recorded 21 kills and a .347 attack percentage to go along with four blocks.
Clyde finished with 10 kills and 25 digs. Freshman
Erica Denallo (Independence/Independence) added 13 kills and 11 digs. Fellow rookie
Madison Taggart (Milford/Milford) caused the Quakers problems at the net posting five blocks.
Senior setter
Laura Mauer (Terre Haute, Ind./North) triggered the Pioneer attack with 46 assists. She also chipped in with 15 digs. Libero
Mary Ervin (Lewis Center/Olentangy Orange) had a team-best 28 digs.
Marietta travels to Lexington, Ky. for a pair of non-conference matches at Transylvania on Saturday (Oct. 4). The Pioneers play Anderson University at 3:00 p.m. and Transylvania at 5:00 p.m.
