MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College volleyball lost its final home match of the season to Otterbein University by the score of 3-0 Tuesday (Oct. 28) evening. Marietta drops to 10-18 overall and 2-6 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. The Cardinals improve to 16-11 on the season and 7-1 in the OAC.
Otterbein remains tied for first place in the conference standings with the University of Mount Union. With one match to play, the Pioneers are in a three-way tie for seventh place. The top eight schools make the OAC Tournament.
The Cardinals posted set scores of 30-28, 25-21 and 25-22 in the victory. In the first set, Marietta was serving for the set leading 24-23 but failed to convert the following point. The Pioneers staved off four Otterbein set points before the Cardinals put the opening set away with a kill and a service ace from Lauren Blumberg.
Marietta jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second set before Otterbein battled back to knot the set at 5-5. With the score tied 21-21, the Cardinals won the final four points of the set for a 2-0 lead. Otterbein won three of the final four points of the third set to seal the victory.
A trio of juniors led the Pioneer attack.
Devin Walter (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport) had a team-high nine kills, while
Shauntiel Oliver-Smith (Elyria/Elyria) had eight kills and
Chloe Janson (Lawrenceburg, Ind./East Central) finished with seven kills and three blocks.
Setter
Laura Mauer (Terre Haute, Ind./North), who was honored prior to the match on senior night, dished out 24 assists and notched three blocks. Libero
Mary Ervin (Lewis Center/Olentangy Orange) tallied 21 digs, while
Kennedy Clyde (Chagrin Falls/Hawken School) had 11.
Marietta wraps up the regular season on Saturday (Nov. 1) with a 1:00 p.m. match at Ohio Northern University. Fans can follow the Pioneers all season long at
