Women's Soccer posts 2-2 double overtime tie at John Carroll

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio — The Marietta College women's soccer team played to a 2-2 double overtime tie at John Carroll University Saturday (Oct. 18) evening. The Pioneers move to 1-12-2 on the season and 1-3-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. The Blue Streaks are 9-3-2 overall and 3-1-1 in the OAC.

After playing a scoreless first half both offenses got on track in the second period. Senior Stevie Reilly (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park Senior) put the Pioneers on the board first with a goal in the 57th minute. Following a foul on JCU, Mo Ruff (Dublin/Columbus School for Girls) played the direct kick into the box where Reilly headed it home.

Reilly struck again in the 68th minute giving the Pioneers a 2-0 lead. Sydney Willis (Moreland Hills/Orange) beat her defender and slipped the ball to Reilly who fired it home. The goal was Reilly's third of the season.

John Carroll answered less than a minute later. Andrea Regrut lobbed the ball into the box where Preston Mendel managed to get a leg on the ball to deflect it into the net.

Preston tallied the equalizer in the 76th minute with an assist from Danielle Sharbaugh and Maggie Reilly. The goal was Mendel's third of the season.

The Pioneers had a golden opportunity to win the match in the second overtime period. JCU keeper Haley McDonald made a sliding save on a shot from Ali Kowal (Vermilion/Vermilion) but was unable to control the ball. Willis was there for the follow-up shot with McDonald still on the ground. But her shot sailed high.

McDonald played the full 110 minutes in goal for the Blue Streaks and made 11 saves. Freshman Rebecca Tenney (Pepper Pike/Orange) had four saves in goal for the Pioneers.

For the match, John Carroll outshot the Pioneers by one, 20-19. Marietta held a slim 5-4 edge in corner kicks.
