Blue Streaks escape with 3-2 win over Volleyball

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College volleyball team nearly pilled off an upset of John Carroll University Saturday (Oct. 18) afternoon. The Blue Streaks escaped Ban Johnson Arena with a 3-2 win posting set scores of 25-23, 25-15, 22-25, 23-25 and 15-12.

Trailing 21-15 in the first set, John Carroll (18-5 overall, 4-1 OAC) scored 10 of the final 12 points to take the set, 25-23. Natalie May's service ace provided the set point. The Blue Streaks raced out to 10-1 lead in the second set and cruised to a 25-15 win.

Marietta (9-15 overall, 2-4 OAC) refused to go away quietly. John Carroll appeared to be on its way to a three-game sweep leading 22-17 in the third set. But eight straight points from the Pioneers extended the match. Marietta won the fourth set 25-23 to force the fifth, and deciding, set.

John Carroll came out strong in the fifth set leading 7-3 early and forcing Marietta to take a timeout. The Pioneers recovered and got within one point, 11-10, but couldn't grab the lead. The Streaks sealed the victory with a 15-12 win in the fifth set.

Junior Kennedy Clyde (Chagrin Falls/Hawken School) and freshman Erica Denallo (Independence/Independence) led the Pioneers with 15 kills each. Clyde added three blocks and 20 digs. Junior middle blocker Chloe Janson (Lawrenceburg, Ind./East Central) finished with 10 kills and seven blocks.

Senior setter Laura Mauer (Terre Haute, Ind./North) dished out 26 assists and had 18 digs and five blocks. Junior libero Mary Ervin (Lewis Center/Olentangy Orange) recorded 32 digs and had three service aces. Defensive specialist Julia Moskaluk (Copley/Revere) chipped in with 15 digs and three aces.
