Muskingum shuts out Women's Soccer in OAC showdown

MARIETTA, Ohio — Muskingum University scored one goal in each half to defeat Marietta College 2-0 Wednesday (Oct. 15) in Ohio Athletic Conference women's soccer action. The Pioneers drop to 1-12-1 on the season and 1-3 in the OAC. Muskingum improves to 9-3-1 overall and 2-2 in league play.

The Muskies jumped on top just under 10 minutes into the match and did so in impressive fashion. Junior Lauren Hambel launched a shot from over 40-yards out that dipped under the crossbar for a 1-0 Muskingum lead. The goal was Hambel's first of the season.

Both teams kept the pressure on the goalkeepers in the first half. Muskingum's Liz Mitchell made five saves in the opening period, while Marietta's Brittany Wolfe (Lancaster/Lancaster) turned away six shots.

Trailing by a goal, the Pioneers went on the offensive in the second half. Marietta outshot the Muskies 13-6 in the final period. Mitchell finished the clean sheet with three more saves in the second half.

Muskingum just missed its second goal of the match in the opening minutes of the second half. Stephanie Siwicki fired a shot that rocked the post but deflected away from the goal.

Freshman Natalie O'Dell found the back of the net in the 85th minute to give Muskingum the two-goal advantage. O'Dell shot from outside the 18-yard box to the far post for her first goal of the season.

Wolfe finished the match with seven total saves, while Mitchell notched eight. The Pioneers outshot Muskingum 21-16 and had a slim 5-3 edge in corner kicks.
