The Pioneer win avenged an early season loss and gives Marietta sole possession of second place in the Ohio Athletic Conference standings, one game behind Capital.

With the victory, Marietta improved to 17-6 overall and 13-3 in the OAC. The loss dropped BW to 17-6 overall and 12-4 in the OAC.

The Pioneers jumped out to an early, 5-0 lead at the 19:08 mark when senior guard Scott Kimmey (Olmsted Falls/Olmsted Falls) made a three-pointer. It was the first of four 5-point leads with the last at 11-6 at 16:58 when senior guard Tyler Worstell (Prospect/Franklin Heights) made a layup.

After BW cut the lead to 11-10 at 14:10 on a Kyle Payne jump shot, Marietta scored four straight to lead 15-10 at 12:21.  BW then went on an 8-2 run to take its first lead at 8:55 when senior guard Ben Umbel grabbed an offensive rebound, scored, was fouled and made his foul shot.

BW's lead grew to 35-30 with 51 seconds left when junior Skyler Simpson made two foul shots. An offensive rebound and basket by Marietta's senior forward Jason Humphrey (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier) with 39 seconds left closed out the scoring and BW led, 35-32, at the intermission.

The Yellow Jackets held on to the lead through the first seven plus minutes of the second half.  Junior guard Tyler Hammond (Cleveland/St. Ignatius) was fouled on a layup and converted the three-point play to give Marietta the lead 47-46, with 12:40 on the clock.

After exchanging the lead several times, Worstell hit a jumper with 5:56 left to knot the score at 59-59. The Yellow Jackets would miss shots on their next three possessions, including two deep three-point attempts, while Marietta hit three straight jumpers to build a six-point lead, 65-59, with 4:00 remaining.

BW answered with a 9-0 run to reclaim the lead, 70-67, with 36.9 seconds left on the clock. Umbel capped the run with a layup. He also was fouled, but missed the free throw and an opportunity for a two-possession lead.

Sophomore post player Garrett Stephenson (West Milton/Milton-Union) got Marietta within one at 70-69 with two foul shots with 25.4 left. The Pioneers then fouled Umbel with 16.3 seconds left, but he missed the front end of a 1-and-1 that set the stage for Owens' game winning three-pointer with 3.4 seconds left.

BW had one last chance to tie or win, but the ball was fumbled near midcourt and the Yellow Jackets couldn't get the shot off. The loss was just BW's second in its last 16 contests.

Senior J.J. Martin (Huntington, W.Va./Huntington) and Stephenson paced the Pioneers with 12 points and eight rebounds each. Hammond added 11 points, while Owens finished with 10 points.

Junior Guard Kevin Krakowiak led the Yellow Jackets with 17 points. Senior forward Chris Ameen had 12 points and five boards. Payne finished with 11 points and Umbel chipped in with 10 points and a game-high nine rebounds.

Marietta shot 45.0% (27-of-60) from the floor, 38.5% (5-of-13) behind the arc and 59.1% (13-of-22) at the free throw line. Baldwin Wallace went 28-of-63 (44.4%) from the floor, 8-of-27 (29.6%) from the three and 6-of-11 (54.5%) at the line.

Each team committed 13 turnovers, while Marietta grabbed 40 rebounds to BW's 37.
