MARIETTA, Ohio – Five Pioneers scored in double figures as Marietta College defeated Bethany College (W.Va.) by the score of 97-56 Tuesday (Nov. 19) evening in women's basketball action. Marietta improves to 2-1 on the season, while the Bison fall to 0-1.
Marietta scored the first six points and raced out to a 14-2 lead four minutes into the game. The Pioneers led by as many as 27 points in the opening period including 50-23 at halftime.
Head coach Stacia Shrider was able to give her bench plenty of playing time. Playing with as many as four freshmen on the floor at the same time, rookie
Tristin Toman (Pennsboro, W.Va./Ritchie County) hit a pair of free throws to give the Pioneers a 45-point lead, 91-46, with 3:50 left in the game.
Junior
Heather Booth (Newport/Frontier) led all scorers with 18 points on a 9-of-13 shooting night. Classmate
Candice Alexander (Fairborn/Fairborn) connected on 7-of-9 shot attempts and finished with 16 points.
Freshman
Mackenzie Kiser (Windham/Champion) came off the bench to score 16 points and tie with Booth for the team lead in rebounds with six. Senior
Tori Dixon (Londonderry/Vinton County) chipped in with 12 points, while junior
Sierra Sigman (Chillicothe/Zane Trace) added 10. Dixon hit three shots from behind the arc and now needs just two more three-pointers to tie the MC career record of 162.
Sophomore Sami Schott paced the Bison with 13 points. Freshman Lauren Simpson scored 12 points, while senior Taylor Verrico added 10 points and a game-high eight rebounds.
Marietta won the battle of the boards, 43-27. Bethany committed 19 turnovers, while the Pioneers had 13 turnovers.
For the game, the Pioneers hit 38-of-64 (59.4%) field goal attempts, 4-of-8 (50.0%) from three-point range and 17-of-21 (81.0%) at the free throw line. Bethany shot 23-of-61 (37.7%) from the floor, 6-of-19 (31.6%) behind the arc and 4-of-7 (57.1%) at the line.
