MEADVILLE, Pa. – Five Pioneers scored in double figures as Marietta College defeated D'Youville College 96-74 Saturday (Nov. 16) in women's basketball action. Marietta went 1-1 in the Greg Richards Memorial Tip-Off Classic hosted by Allegheny College.
After giving up the first two points of the game, Marietta quickly tied the game and never trailed again. The Pioneers led by as many as 31 points en route to their first win of the young season.
The Marietta bench proved to be the difference in the game as the Pioneer bench outscored D'Youville's 47-19. Early foul trouble forced Marietta head coach Stacia Shrider to play several reserves for extended minutes.
Marietta was whistled for 36 fouls, which resulted in 56 free throw attempts for D'Youville. Fortunately for the Pioneers, they only converted 36 of those attempts.
Senior
Tori Dixon (Londonderry/Vinton County) bounced back from a cold shooting opening night and connected on 5-of-8 field goal attempts, including four treys, for 15 points. Freshmen
Morgan Liedtke (Lowell, Ohio/Fort Frye) and
Mackenzie Kiser (Windham/Champion) each added 15 points as well. Kiser also had seven rebounds.
Freshman Tristan Toman chipped in with 11 points, while senior
Paige Lamb (Marietta/Marietta) had 10 points and five rebounds to go along with four assists.
Shannon Dougherty led D'Youville with 22 points. Alexis Smith finished with 13 points and Jean-Ann Korona pulled down a game-high 10 boards.
The Pioneers had a convincing edge on the glass, 53-36. D'Youville committed 13 turnovers and Marietta had 10.
For the game, Marietta hit 35-of-73 (47.9%) field goal attempts, 9-of-22 (40.9%) from three-point range and 17-of-24 (70.8%) at the free throw line. D'Youville went 18-of-49 (36.7%) from the floor, 2-of-13 (15.4%) behind the arc and 36-of-56 (64.3%) at the line.
Marietta is back in action on Tuesday (Nov. 19) in Ban Johnson Arena against Bethany College (W.Va.). Tip is set for 7:30 p.m. Fans can follow the Pioneers all season long at
