MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Marietta College women's basketball fell to Fredonia State University (N.Y.) by the score of 60-58 Friday (Nov. 15) in the season-opener for both schools. The Pioneers will conclude play in the Greg Richards Memorial Tip-Off Classic against D'Youville College Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
In a game that featured eight lead changes and eight ties, neither team led by more than seven points throughout. The teams went to the locker room at halftime tied 29-29.
Fredonia used an 8-3 run midway through the second half to push the lead to seven, 54-47, on a layup by Becky Hebert with 8:01 left in the game. The Pioneers battled back to grab the lead, 58-56, on a jumper from
Tori Dixon (Londonderry/Vinton County) with 1:47 remaining.
Fredonia held Marietta scoreless the rest of the way and Hebert scored on another layup with just five seconds left on the clock for the final margin, 60-58. Marietta wasn't able to get a shot off before the final buzzer.
Junior
Candice Alexander (Fairborn/Fairborn) notched a double double with 15 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Fellow juniors
Heather Booth (Newport/Frontier) and
Sierra Sigman (Chillicothe/Zane Trace) each chipped in with 10 points.
Hebert led all scorers with 24 points and grabbed seven boards. Alexis Cheatham added 13 points and five rebounds.
For the game, Fredonia State was 26-of-58 (44.8%) from the floor, 4-of-13 (30.8%) behind the arc and 4-of-10 (40.0%) at the line. Marietta his 25-of-71 (35.2%) shot attempts, 2-of-24 (8.3%) from three-point range and 6-of-10 (60.0%) at the charity stripe. Fredonia committed 21 turnovers, while the Pioneers had 19.
