MARIETTA, Ohio – Mount Union junior Coty Lipply scored with 62 seconds left in the second half propelling the Purple Raiders to a 3-2 victory over Marietta College Wednesday (Oct. 9) in men's soccer action.
Lipply got the game winning shot off after a scramble in the six-yard box where the Marietta (3-8 overall, 0-2 OAC) defense failed to clear the ball. The goal was Lipply's fourth of the season.
Mount Union (6-6, 1-1 OAC) took the lead in the 19th minute when senior Thomas Beck scored the first of his two goals in the match. Beck dribbled into the 18-yard box and slipped the ball into the lower left corner of the net. The Purple Raiders took the 1-0 lead into halftime.
The Pioneers struck quickly in the second period. Junior
Wesley Riley (Marietta/Marietta) created a one-on-one with the Mount keeper and fired the ball in for the equalizer in the 48th minute. Riley leads Marietta with nine goals this season.
Marietta junior
Andrew Matakovich (Amherst, Ohio/Amherst Steele) entered the match in the 62nd minute and made an immediate impact. Matakovich sent a cross into the 18-yard box where senior
Lucas Eick (Hartville/Marlington) was waiting and shot the ball into the lower left corner to put the Pioneers up 2-1 at the 62:42 mark.
Mount Union turned up the pressure and knotted the match at 2-2 in the 77th minute. Freshman Jacob Sutton took a point blank shot that was blocked and Beck's follow-up shot deflected off the Pioneer keeper and into the net.
Neither team got a good scoring opportunity over the final 12 minutes until the Raiders forced the ball into the Marietta six-yard box where Lipply sealed the Mount Union victory.
Freshman Dylan Lias had three saves in goal for Mount Union, while senior
Chris Stollar (Marietta/Marietta) stopped four shots for the Pioneers.
After a first half that saw each team take three shots, the Purple raiders finished with a slight 11-8 edge in shots. Mount also held a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.
