MARIETTA, Ohio – The University of Mount Union scored in the opening minute of the match and went on to defeat Marietta College 4-0 Tuesday (Oct. 8) afternoon in women's soccer action.
The Purple Raiders (9-2-1 overall, 2-0 OAC) needed just 40 seconds to score the first goal of the match. Junior Allison Fouss collected a loose ball in the six-yard box and slipped a shot past the Marietta keeper for the goal, her fourth of the season.
Marietta (2-9, 0-2) settled down and played even with the Raiders for the remainder of the first half.
Two goals less than 90 seconds apart early in the second period put the game away for Mount Union. Carolyn Balzano fired a shot just under the cross bar from inside the 18-yard box for the Raiders' second goal in the 52nd minute. Balzano then picked up an assist in the 53rd minute when Shannon Evans found the back of the net.
Balzano closed out the scoring for Mount Union in the 79th minute. She dribbled into the 18-yard box and then beat the keeper one-on-one for her sixth goal of the season.
Maria Favorite went the distance in goal for the Purple Raiders and made five saves in the match. Senior
Kaitlyn Pearse (Galena/Olentangy Orange) started for the Pioneers and had four saves before leaving the game with an injury. Freshman Sam Kelly took over and recorded one save.
For the match, Mount Union outshot the Pioneers 12-8. The Purple Raiders had a decisive 9-2 advantage in corner kicks.
