MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College volleyball team split a pair of matches Saturday (Oct.5) afternoon. The Pioneers dropped a 3-2 decision to Heidelberg University and posted a 3-0 win over West Liberty University (W.Va.).
Marietta (10-12 overall, 0-2 OAC) won the first two sets against Heidelberg before letting the match slip away. The set scores were 22-25, 17-25, 25-20, 25-16 and 15-6 for the Student Princes.
Freshman right-side hitter Sarah Parker was a one-woman wrecking crew for Heidelberg. Parker had a match-high 17 kills and a .457 attack percentage. She also had six blocks in the match.
Four Pioneers had double digit kills. Junior
Rachel Hackenberg (Canal Winchester/Franklin Heights) led the way with 12. Senior Paige DeVrendt and sophomore
Keri Horton (Westland, Mich./Wayne Memorial) had 11 kills, while sophomore
Chloe Janson (Lawrenceburg, Ind./East Central) added 10.
Junior setter
Laura Mauer (Terre Haute, Ind./North) dished out a match-best 45 assists, while sophomore libero tallied a match-high 16 digs. Sophomore
Kennedy Clyde (Chagrin Falls/Hawken School) added 12 digs and four blocks.
The Pioneers swept West Liberty 25-11, 26-24 and 25-22 in the last match of the day. Janson and DeVriendt led the Marietta attack with 11 kills each. Hackenberg chipped with nine kills and four blocks.
Mauer notched 36 assists and 10 digs. Ervin controlled the back line with 20 digs. Clyde added five kills and 11 digs for the match.
