MARIETTA, Ohio – No. 10 ranked Heidelberg University scored the first 34 points of the game en route to a 68-17 victory over Marietta College Saturday (Oct. 5) night at Don Drumm Stadium.
Heidelberg (4-0 overall, 3-0 OAC) scored touchdowns on its first eight possessions of the game and did not have to punt the ball all night. The Student Princes amassed 629 yards of total offense including 361 on the ground and 268 passing.
Junior quarterback Michael Mees through for five touchdowns completing 13-of-16 passes for 180 yards. Sophomore backup Jon Sandwisch completed 3-of-6 passes for 88 yards and a touchdown. He was picked off once.
Junior running back Cartel Brooks demonstrated why he is the top ball carrier in the OAC rushing for 134 yards on 16 carries, an average of 8.4 yards per carry. He scored a pair of touchdowns.
Marietta (0-4, 0-3) got on the board midway through the second quarter when freshman
Garret Butler (Williamstown, W.Va/Williamstown) nailed a 40-yard field goal to cap a 12-play, 52-yard drive.
Mees hit junior wide receiver Donteea Dye for a 44-yard touchdown pass on the second play of the ensuing drive to give Heidelberg a 41-3 lead. Marietta's
Tim Conner (Cleveland/Glenville) fielded the kickoff at his own seven yard line and raced 93 yards to pay dirt.
The Pioneers' final score of the game came on a 39-yard pass from senior quarterback
Tom Fulton (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Hills). Fulton connected with senior wired receiver
Kirby Harris (Greenville, S.C./South Side) with 19 seconds left in the first half.
Heidelberg's defense shutout the Pioneers in the second half while the offense put 13 more points on the board in the second half.
Conner rushed for 105 yards on 23 carries. Freshman Roger Bush added 89 yards on 14 carries. Fulton threw for 85 yards on 8-of-20 passing with a touchdown and an interception.
