MARIETTA, Ohio – Playing its third straight nationally ranked opponent, Marietta College suffered a 62-7 setback against No. 21 John Carroll University Saturday (Oct. 12) afternoon at Don Drumm Stadium.
The Homecoming loss dropped the Pioneers to 0-5 on the season and 0-4 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. John Carroll improves to 5-0 overall and 4-0 in league play.
Women's basketball senior Paige Lamb and Alpha Tau Omega senior C.J. Englert were crowned Homecoming Queen and King during halftime ceremonies.
The Blue Streaks took the opening kickoff and marched down the field in nine plays to take a 7-0 lead when senior DaQuan Grobsmith dove in from a yard out. The drive covered 79 yards and took just 3:13 off the clock.
Grobsmith finished with 177 yards on 18 carries and three touchdowns. Junior Tommy Michals took over in the second half and rushed for 170 yards on 13 carries including a 97-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.
Defensively, the Blue Streaks forced four Pioneer turnovers and limited Marietta to 262 yards of total offense. Junior linebacker Choe Samba picked off a Marietta pass and returned it 77 yards to paydirt.
Junior quarterback Mark Myers completed 15-of-23 passes for 141 yards and three touchdowns. He was intercepted once.
Marietta got on the board with 1:40 left in the game. Sophomore quarterback
Axten Franzoy (Las Cruces, N.M./Mayfield) bulled his way into the endzone from a yard out. The score was just the second touchdown the Blue Streaks have allowed this season.
Freshman Roger Bush had a nice game off the bench for the Pioneers. Bush carried the ball 16 times for 93 yards rushing.
Senior quarterback
Tom Fulton (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Hills) completed 13-of-27 passes for 127 yards. He was picked off twice.
