ADA, Ohio – Ohio Northern University scored five times on plays of over 20 yards as the Polar Bears defeated Marietta College 45-0 Saturday (Oct. 19) afternoon in Dial-Roberson Stadium.
Ohio Northern (3-3 overall, 2-3 OAC) broke open a close game with three touchdowns in the final five minutes of the first half. The Polar Bears scored on a 21-yard touchdown pass, a 72-yard punt return and a 70-yard pass to take a 24-0 lead into halftime.
The Polar Bears got on the board with 11:13 left in the first quarter on a 27-yard field goal by Andrew DiMario. Marietta (0-6, 0-5) answered with an 11-play drive that stalled on the ONU 19-yard line. The Pioneers missed a 36-yard field goal attempt that would have tied the game.
Junior quarterback Patrick Angle hit Shaile Chamberlain for a 21-yard touchdown to make it 10-0. Angle completed 14-of-27 passes for 253 yards and three TDs. Senior Ryan Malone's 72-yard punt return pushed the lead to 17-0 with 2:57 left in the first half.
After forcing Marietta to punt on the ensuing possession, ONU put the ball in play at its own 30-yard line with 1:46 left on the clock. The Polar Bears needed just one play, a 70-yard pass from Angle to Devon Price, to reach the endzone.
Angle hit Malone on a 44-yard scoring strike on the Polar Bears' first possession of the third quarter to make it 31-0.
Sophomore Justin Magazine scored from a yard out on ONU's next drive to make it 38-0 with 8:21 remaining in the third quarter. Magazine carried the ball 14 times for a career-high 115 yards and a touchdown.
ONU's reserve quarterback Connor Devine closed out the scoring with a 29-yard touchdown pass to Justin McCray in the fourth quarter.
Marietta rushed for a season-high 219 yards. Junior running back
Tim Conner (Cleveland/Glenville) carried the ball 30 times for 118 yards. It was Conner's third 100-yard game of the season. Freshman Roger Bush had a career-high 98 yards rushing on 20 carries.
Senior quarterback
Tom Fulton (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Hills) completed 12-of-27 passes for 62 yards. Senior linebacker
Jake Hammer (Wadsworth/St. Vincent-St. Mary), the OAC's leading tackler, had 14 tackles to lead the Pioneer defense.
