MARIETTA, Ohio – Otterbein University broke a scoreless tie with a goal in the 76th minute to defeat Marietta College 1-0 in women's soccer Tuesday (Oct. 29) afternoon.
The Cardinals, 11-5-1 overall, 6-2 OAC maintained at least a share of first place in the league standings. The Pioneers dropped to 2-15 overall and 0-7 in the OAC. Marietta finishes the season with a 1:00 p.m. match on Saturday (Nov. 2) at Baldwin Wallace.
Otterbein stayed on the attack most of the match possessing the ball in Marietta's defensive half of the field for the majority of the match. The Pioneer defense rose to the challenge repeatedly turning the Cardinals away.
Senior keeper
Kaitlyn Pearse (Galena/Olentangy Orange) made several nice saves to keep the Cardinals off the scoreboard in the first half. Otterbein took 10 shots to just three for Marietta in the opening period.
Otterbein finally broke through in the 76th minute. Freshman Erica Meier dribbled into the box along the end line and centered the ball to sophomore Jillian Strimbu just outside the top of the six-yard box.
Strimbu slipped the ball past Pearse and into the lower right corner of the net for the game winner. The goal was Strimbu's tenth of the season.
Sophomore Dana Strimbu earned the shutout in goal for the Cardinals making one save in the match. Pearse finished with eight saves for the Pioneers.
For the match, Otterbein took 15 shots, while Marietta managed three. The Cardinals also held an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks.
